Psalm 62:1-6
62:1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.
How long will all of you attack a man
to batter him,
like a leaning wall, a tottering fence?
They only plan to thrust him down from his high position.
They take pleasure in falsehood.
They bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse. Selah
For God alone, O my soul, wait in silence,
for my hope is from him.
He only is my rock and my salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken. (ESV)

Strong, impenetrable, secure, and permanent-fortresses are safe, trustworthy structures. In great contrast, there are tottering fences and leaning walls, structures which one expects to fall over with a small gust of wind. In honesty, we will agree with the psalmist that we are much closer to the tottering fence than the fortress. We know we can't make it on our own, so we search for a fortress in this world full of pressures and storms. Some people trust in money, friends, family, or habits to protect them. Are you running for the fortress of God, and God alone? When we depend on him, we know we will not be shaken!
