Psalm 136:1-9

136:1 Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the God of gods,
for his steadfast love endures forever.
Give thanks to the Lord of lords,
for his steadfast love endures forever;

to him who alone does great wonders,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who by understanding made the heavens,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who spread out the earth above the waters,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
to him who made the great lights,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
the sun to rule over the day,
for his steadfast love endures forever;
the moon and stars to rule over the night,
for his steadfast love endures forever; (ESV)

by Leanne Lippincott

Throughout this psalm, four words are repeated at the end of all 26 verses:“His love endures forever.” My trusty Webster’s New World Dictionary variously defines forever as “for eternity; for always; endlessly; at all times.” Those are difficult words to comprehend, especially eternity. The concept of“no end” is beyond my ability to understand or even imagine. But I’m not worried. The bottom line is that God’s love has no end, no limits. He’s not about to climb on top of the pearly gates and shout, “I’ve had it with you humans! And I don’t love you anymore!” That should be an immensely comforting thought to all of us.
