Job 14:1-6

14:1 “Man who is born of a woman
is few of days and full of trouble.
He comes out like a flower and withers;
he flees like a shadow and continues not.
And do you open your eyes on such a one
and bring me into judgment with you?
Who can bring a clean thing out of an unclean?
There is not one.
Since his days are determined,
and the number of his months is with you,
and you have appointed his limits that he cannot pass,
look away from him and leave him alone,
that he may enjoy, like a hired hand, his day. (ESV)

by Dale E. Rood

There are two truths that Job alludes to here. First, the days of a man are transitory. (vv. 1-2) James 4:14 says“What is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little while, and then vanishes away.” Second, the number of our days and the boundaries of our life are under God’s control. (v. 5) Then with these understandings of truth, he asks God just to leave him alone so that he can at least have rest in the days that are granted to him (vv. 3,6). Have you ever felt like making such a request to God? God listens caringly to such honesty as this, but don’t expect God to join you in your pity party.
