John 1:1-5
1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (ESV)

Jesus came to show us how to live a life pleasing to God. He has been with God and knows God, and is God’s son. Before Jesus’ incarnation, God spoke to his people through the law and the prophets. Often, in order to contrast God’s way with man’s way, Jesus stood the religious establishment on its head. The rules said, “an eye for an eye,” but Jesus said, “Don’t resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also” (Matthew 5:39, NIV). Not only did he say it, but he also lived it. How else could we account for his monumental sacrifice for you and me?
