1 Corinthians 12:1-6

12:1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed. You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. (ESV)

by Linda Harris

I’m appalled at how often in today’s society Jesus’ or God’s name is spoken in vain. I’ve stopped watching certain otherwise clean TV programs because of the flippant way people use his name. I even hear children using those phrases.

According to today’s scripture, those people are not speaking by the power of the Holy Spirit, for the Spirit does not prompt us to speak in a way that does not honor God. As Christians, we should be careful not to fall into the speech patterns of the world, because even the smallest exclamation can be a witness or a stumbling block.
