Psalm 105:1-11

105:1 Oh give thanks to the Lord; call upon his name;
make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him;
tell of all his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name;
let the hearts of those who seek the Lord rejoice!
Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
O offspring of Abraham, his servant,
children of Jacob, his chosen ones!

He is the Lord our God;
his judgments are in all the earth.
He remembers his covenant forever,
the word that he commanded, for a thousand generations,
the covenant that he made with Abraham,
his sworn promise to Isaac,
which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute,
to Israel as an everlasting covenant,
saying, “To you I will give the land of Canaan
as your portion for an inheritance.” (ESV)

My mother was plagued by anxiety and depression most of her adult life. When I was a high school freshman, she had her first nervous breakdown, and I wasn’t allowed to visit her for two months. It sounds strange now, but I had trouble remembering what she looked like. I ended up studying the photo that was propped on top of the piano. Her smiling visage gave me a sense of peace and filled me with the hope that we would see each other again. And we did.

This psalm tells us to look to the Lord for strength and “seek his face always” (v. 4). Except for his contemporaries, no one knows precisely what Jesus looked like. But when I picture him, I see a face that radiates kindness, gentleness, and love. His smiling, compassionate visage gives me a sense of peace and fills me with the hope that will see each other some day. And we will.
