Genesis 1:1-5

1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.

And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. (ESV)

Recently, we had a dinnertime discussion about creation. As our children were telling us that God had created everything, one of them piped in, “But who created God?”

As I studied this passage, I used my NIV color-coded Bible. I noticed that almost all of Genesis 1 is gray (history/creation) except for the last half of verse 2, “and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.” It was color-coded in purple (God) which made it stand out on the page. What a visual image! In the all the “gray,” when the world was nothing, God was there! He was there from before the beginning, he is there now, and he will always be there. God is God; he is the creator and sustainer of life!
