Genesis 46:1-4
46:1 So Israel took his journey with all that he had and came to Beersheba, and offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. And God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here am I.” Then he said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again, and Joseph's hand shall close your eyes.” (ESV)

When Abraham went to Egypt during a famine he got into trouble (Genesis 12:10-20). God told Isaac not to go to Egypt (Genesis 26:1-2). Remembering these stories of his father and grandfather, Jacob may have had reservations about going to Egypt. But God told him not to be afraid. What made the difference? Jacob stopped and worshiped before he went far on his journey.
Have you found yourself in situations where things aren’t going right? Did you pray about the situation before getting into it? God isn’t obligated to rescue us from a tough situation we’ve gotten ourselves into. When we seek God’s will, we can move ahead in confidence.
