Mark 1:14-17

Now after John was arrested, Jesus came into Galilee, proclaiming the gospel of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”

Passing alongside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew the brother of Simon casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.” (ESV)

by Paula Davis

Do you like to fish? My parents have very different memories of fishing when they were young. My mother remembers fishing with her father and has photos of the strings of fish they caught. It was a special time between father and daughter. My father, on the other hand, remembers going fishing once. In his words, “I didn’t catch a single fish, and I’ve never been back.” When it comes to fishing for men, I believe Christians can have similar experiences. While not all of us are called to be evangelists, we are all called to be fishers of men. God expects us to share the gospel message when we are given the opportunity, while some may be given that opportunity more than others. The important thing is to pray that you will recognize the opportunity to “fish” when it is presented and that you will be bold in sharing your faith.
