1 Peter 5:1-5

5:1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (ESV)

by Paula Davis

Are the most respected leaders those who order people around and exert power over them? Usually this is not the case. The most respected leaders are those who are humble, recognizing that their part to play as leader isn’t more important than that of those he or she leads; it is just a different role. These leaders know the responsibility they hold and how they will be held accountable for their leadership when they stand before God. If you are a leader, examine your leadership attitude and the attitude of your heart. It is easier for you to recognize that you need to be more humble than for God to need to humble you.
