1 Chronicles 17:7-10

Now, therefore, thus shall you say to my servant David, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, to be prince over my people Israel, and I have been with you wherever you have gone and have cut off all your enemies from before you. And I will make for you a name, like the name of the great ones of the earth. And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more. And violent men shall waste them no more, as formerly, from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel. And I will subdue all your enemies. Moreover, I declare to you that the Lord will build you a house. (ESV)

by Linda Harris

David wanted to build God a house. Instead, God promised to build David a house—not a physical building but a legacy. Indeed, David still stands as one of the greatest men who ever lived. In addition, Jesus Christ descended from David. What greater legacy could anyone have?

Though followers of Christ may not be physical descendants of David, we are grafted into God’s spiritual genealogy. The promises made to David’s descendants also apply to believers. In particular, God assured rest to Israel as well as David’s descendants (2 Samuel 7:10-15, particularly verse 11). Jesus provides the promised rest of heaven (Hebrews 4:1-11). The Sabbath is a foretaste of the eternal rest we will someday enjoy.
