Daniel 9:1-3

9:1 In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, by descent a Mede, who was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans— in the first year of his reign, I, Daniel, perceived in the books the number of years that, according to the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet, must pass before the end of the desolations of Jerusalem, namely, seventy years.

Then I turned my face to the Lord God, seeking him by prayer and pleas for mercy with fasting and sackcloth and ashes. (ESV)

by Linda Harris

When the exile began, Daniel was a young man. Scholars agree that Daniel was around 80 years old when he read Jeremiah’s words and realized the captivity was nearly over. This prompted him to pray for the Hebrews and the restoration of the nation in Israel.

When you read the Bible, is it merely an exercise or obligation? Or do its words move you to prayer? What can you do to make the scriptures more alive as you read each day?
