Hebrews 12:8-11

If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it. (ESV)

by Leota Stevens

My momma was a kind and loving lady, but she would not tolerate disrespect or disobedience. Once when I was about twelve years old, and thought I knew just about all there was to know, I challenged my mother’s authority over me. What an impudent attitude I displayed to her that day! Some parents would have let my stinging remarks slide and just chalk them up to childishness, but not my momma. Although I towered over her in size, she had no difficulty giving me a spanking that humbled my haughtiness and left a “real impression” on me. She spoke quietly to me later about my rebellious heart and reassured me of her loving devotion to my life. She said she took no joy in my punishment, but she would betray her position as my guardian if she allowed me to develop habits that would ruin me later in life. God loves his children even more than my momma loved me.
