Isaiah 11:1-3
11:1 There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse,
and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit.
And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him,
the Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
the Spirit of counsel and might,
the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord.
And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord.
He shall not judge by what his eyes see,
or decide disputes by what his ears hear, (ESV)

We have an electoral process for choosing the individuals who will be our political leaders. It is not a flawless process, and we often feel disappointed with our selected candidate’s performance in office. Here in the Old Testament, we get an inside scoop on the personality and qualifications of the One that God has appointed as the Sovereign leader of the hearts and lives of his creation. How much different our democracy would function if all who held office were modeled after the Master and governed with the Spirit of wisdom, understanding, counsel, might and a knowledge and fear of the Lord.
