Isaiah 53:4-6

Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
But he was wounded for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned—every one—to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
the iniquity of us all. (ESV)

by Leota Stevens

Talk about the ultimate “cliff-hanger”! In the original silent movies the damsel in distress would be tied to the tracks of an oncoming train. Her doom was imminent; all hope was gone—but the hero would appear at just the right moment and free her from her constraints, pay up her debts, and offer to love and marry her. They must have received their inspiration from this short passage of scripture. Here we see the enormous price tag that sin carries, the futility of man to be able to pay the price for true spiritual freedom, and a loving Redeemer willing to sacrifice his life that we might experience abundant and eternal life.
