James 2:18-20

But someone will say, “You have faith and I have works.” Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. You believe that God is one; you do well. Even the demons believe—and shudder! Do you want to be shown, you foolish person, that faith apart from works is useless? (ESV)

by Leota Stevens

Some have turned this scripture into a proverbial controversy that parodies “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” A close reading of scripture surely reveals to the inquiring soul that God’s word is balanced. Both faith and works are important to the life of a follower of Christ. Jesus taught many things, and he backed up his teaching with his actions. He is the example we are to follow as we grow in our relationship with him and our involvement with others.
