James 3:10-12

From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things ought not to be so. Does a spring pour forth from the same opening both fresh and salt water? Can a fig tree, my brothers, bear olives, or a grapevine produce figs? Neither can a salt pond yield fresh water. (ESV)

by Leota Stevens

We are such a dichotomy! We actually defy the functioning of nature. Fruit trees produce fruit from their own kind, springs of water bubble up with only one type of water. We need to emulate their behavior in our speech patterns. Wouldn’t it be confusing to go into an orchard of peaches, expecting to savor the intense sweetness of the delicious fruit, and find the trees laden with briny sardines? It is no less confusing to be in the presence of those who proclaim love for God and find their words to be stinging missives of pride and gossip. Perhaps the world would have a better understanding of Jesus if the message came through on a clear channel. The use of the term hypocrite in reference to Christians would surely diminish.
