James 4:1-3
4:1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you? You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions. (ESV)

Wars and fights don’t start on an international level; they begin with individuals. Every one of us has a battle going on each day we live. That battle is within our own hearts, minds and spirits. The battlefield can be home, church, or business. Self-seeking interest and pride are the enemy arrayed against us. The only successful battle strategy is found in God’s word and our surrender to him as our Commander-in-Chief. Failure to seek and obey God’s will serves only to put us deeper into enemy territory where fraternizing with the world becomes our rationalization for defending our wrongful actions.
