Matthew 18:1-5

18:1 At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, “Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

“Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, (ESV)

In this passage, Jesus uses a child as an example of how we should be. For some, I am sure that this passage seems almost absurd. Children can be so wild: they make messes; they do many things that parents wish they wouldn’t; they won’t go to bed; they don’t like to brush their teeth; and the list goes on! So why would Jesus say that we are to become like children? As a mother, it is easier to understand. My children do not question God, they know he loves them, and they want to please him. My children are innocent. They are human by nature, but ultimately, they have gentle, loving hearts. When something is wrong, my children believe that their daddy can fix it. Christ wants us to be childlike in our faith and to trust in him. He wants us to know that we can rely totally on our heavenly father and live in obedience to him.
