2 Timothy 2:14-19

Remind them of these things, and charge them before God not to quarrel about words, which does no good, but only ruins the hearers. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth. But avoid irreverent babble, for it will lead people into more and more ungodliness, and their talk will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus, who have swerved from the truth, saying that the resurrection has already happened. They are upsetting the faith of some. But God's firm foundation stands, bearing this seal: “The Lord knows those who are his,” and, “Let everyone who names the name of the Lord depart from iniquity.” (ESV)

The Milton SDB Church has an AWANA program. AWANA is an acronym for “Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed,” taken from this passage of scripture. It is neat to see so many children, at such young ages, learning how to be an “approved workman” of God. They are learning to trust in God and put their faith in him. They are learning to not be ashamed by committing scripture to memory. It is amazing how many verses some of those kids store up in their hearts in one year. Obviously, AWANA is not the only program that is helping and training our children to grow into young men and women of God. Sabbath school, youth programs, General Conference programs, and many others contribute to the cause. The important thing is that they are learning to be approved workman for the Lord and they are not ashamed of the gospel of truth. That is a heritage to proud of!
