Numbers 6:22-27
The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to Aaron and his sons, saying, Thus you shall bless the people of Israel: you shall say to them,
The Lord bless you and keep you;
the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you;
the Lord lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace.
“So shall they put my name upon the people of Israel, and I will bless them.” (ESV)

I often use this passage when I offer the benediction to soldiers at military worship services. It serves several simple, yet profound purposes. First, I am invoking God’s blessing and sustaining power in their lives until the next opportunity for corporate worship. Also, I am asking God to reveal himself personally to them during their missions. Moreover, I desire God’s grace to overshadow their every move. They need divine favor in order to survive each day. Perhaps most important, continual peace comes only through a personal relationship with the living God. He places his name upon us through Christ, and blesses us.
