Luke 11:42-44

“But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. Woe to you Pharisees! For you love the best seat in the synagogues and greetings in the marketplaces. Woe to you! For you are like unmarked graves, and people walk over them without knowing it.” (ESV)

by Teri Morgan

Jesus was distraught with the behavior of the Pharisees in these three verses. They tithed without justice and love; they sought the public respect and attention of other humans; their lives were empty (because they did not have the Spirit in them).

The Pharisees were so prideful that they failed to consider there might be a better way to live. Jesus was that Way, but they could not see Him for who He was. Their lack of spiritual discernment left them in the darkness.
