At a Christian drug rehab, I worked with two men whose relationship began like that of Ananias and Saul. Joe (name changed), an addict with a violent record, was approved to use the rehab as a half-way house when paroled from prison. Officers delivered this hulking man, hands cuffed and feet shackled, to Brother Eddie’s office, recommending that he be rejected. Instead, my future boss said, “Unchain him.” A few weeks into rehab, Joe broke the rules and was summoned to Brother Eddie’s office. A showdown of wills took place there. It came to a point where Joe was rising to physically attack Brother Eddie, but he hesitated and then settled back into his seat. Later, Joe revealed the thought that had re-seated him: “How can I do this to the man who had my chains removed?” Joe eventually became a Christian, completed his drug rehab, and accepted a full-time job working with Brother Eddie helping other addicts.
