And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” He answered them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses allowed a man to write a certificate of divorce and to send her away.” And Jesus said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart he wrote you this commandment. But from the beginning of creation, ‘God made them male and female.’ ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ So they are no longer two but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let not man separate.”

God hates divorce (Malachi 2:16). Yet in Moses law, He allowed it. Why? Because of the hardness of peoples’ hearts. God meant for marriage to be unbreakable in this life. These days it seems like that hardness of heart is prevailing over what God has joined together staying that way. Part of the problem is that people want an easy way out of the difficulty they experience in marriage. This is not to say one should stay in a relationship where there is abuse. But it is to say that, when difficulty occurs, there are other ways than divorce to solve the problem, even if it means separation for a period of time to obtain healing.
