What a problem Diotrephes was to the church. He wanted to have preeminence, used malicious words, behaved in a wrong manner, and was disrespectful of church leaders. What a contrast Demetrius was. One simple phrase clarifies: “Demetrius has received a good testimony from everyone” (v.12). He had a good reputation as a trusted believer. The truth he stood on bore testimony to his righteousness. In this we see Demetrius was not self-seeking, malicious, or disrespectful as was Diotrephes. Are you living in a way that gains the respect of your church?
