Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation.

Did you know that the seventh day was the very first thing blessed or called holy in the Bible? It was special, and God patterned six days of work followed by a day of rest. Have you ever really thought about the statement that, “He rested on the seventh day from all His work” (v.2)? Did God need rest? No, of course not. But He had completed His creative work and there is a sense that He set aside a specified time to enjoy it. As we prepare to observe Sabbath, remember that God carved this specific time out as a special time for us to meet with Him.
