“The Lord has given heed to your affliction” (v.11). Hagar was the victim of Abram and Sarai’s sin. She was taken advantage of and cast out. Yet God did not forget her. He displayed His perfect justice in the trauma of Hagar’s story. Though she was cast away by human evil, God recognized her victimhood and drew her back to Himself. God’s promise of descendants ensured she would never be forgotten. While she would experience some of the consequences, she would not be held accountable for the evil done to her. As Psalm 34:18 states, “the Lord is near to the brokenhearted.” God’s mercy was evident in Hagar’s life and it continues in our lives today.
