This is a hard teaching. So hard, in fact, that most Christians and churches struggle with it. The application of it should never be guided by fear or embarrassment of the sinner, but by love. Just as God loves sinners but hates sin, so we, too, are to implement His Word. Our actions should be motivated by love: love for the sinner, love for church, and love for world. Failure to correct sin not only demonstrates a lack of love, but can also lead to contamination of the whole—which would be a direct lack of love. The heart of love must always be a heart focused on restoration once confession is made. Are we truly living as our brothers’ and sisters’ keepers?
