—Isaiah 42:1-9
by: Jerry Johnson.
Isaiah 42 begins a section containing four “Servant Songs” that describe the work of the One who would successfully fulfill the mission God had given. Idolatrous Israel had failed in its quest to remain the Covenant People of God—bringing justice, righteousness, life, light that opens the eyes, and a covenant. This light would also open the eyes of Gentile nations. Just as Israel would eventually be delivered from captivity in Babylon, mankind would be rescued from the darkness of sin and death. The Servant alone is worthy of honor, not anything made of human hands. This was fulfilled in Christ.
