—Luke 1:32-38

When we think of Mary, mother of Jesus, we often think of the amazing gift she was given—to be chosen as the mother of the Messiah. What we forget to consider, however, is that being unwed and expecting had serious consequences for a woman in biblical times. Mary’s decision to follow God’s will was not an easy one; it was a faith-filled choice that could have left her destitute. As we face hard choices—times when following God’s will exposes us to an unknown future—we can be inspired by Mary’s ability to trust in the Lord and say, “May it be done to me according to your word” (v.38).
