Do not take advantage of someone who is down—especially not one of your own people. For Israel, it was imperative that they stick together as a group. God had shown mercy to those who had much, and He expected them to show the same compassion to those among them who had nothing. Making money from the bad circumstances in another’s life was expressly forbidden. God implores us often in the Bible to take care of our own people. Rather than kicking each other when we are down, we should be helping each other out of the pit.
