—Genesis 42:35-38
by: Dorothy Noel.
Jacob was afraid for his sons. It felt as if he was losing them one by one in unpredictable ways. The only similitude is that the other brothers were involved in both “deaths”. Why should he trust Rueben with Benjamin when Rueben had lost Simeon and had not protected Joseph? There was so much fear in Jacob’s heart, he had a hard time remembering God’s provision in his life. This was the man who wrestled with God “and prevailed” (Genesis 32:28). God had promised him a land filled with his descendants (Genesis 32:12). Yet his fear clouded his view of this promise. May we learn from Jacob to not let today’s fears cloud our view of God’s promises, which will be fulfilled by His grace alone.
