—Leviticus 25:8-17

The year of Jubilee was a Sabbath year—a time of rest, liberty and rejuvenation—when the Israelites’ land was not to be worked, but free to grow naturally. This was also a time when people went back to their land and families. God warned them to not take advantage of one another when selling back land to its original owner. This vaguely reminds me of when people come from near and far to celebrate the holidays with their families. People seem to be a bit kinder and more charitable at these times. Why did God establish this year of jubilee? Could it have been, in part, as a reminder of His expectation that His people will treat each other with justice?
