Last week, we touched on how society in Jesus’ time viewed tax collectors. They were looked down upon as terrible people, because they worked for the Romans and it was common for them to be dishonest thieves. Zaccheus was a rich, chief tax collector. Without regard to the people’s disapproval, Jesus wanted to spend time with him. Zaccheus also wanted to see Jesus. After his time with Jesus, Zaccheus chose to change his entire lifestyle by giving away half his riches to more than repay those whom he had cheated. What have you given up to follow Jesus? Would you give away half of what you have if that was what was required of you?
