—1 Corinthians 14:13-19
by: Jasmine Lynch.
Speaking in tongues is a controversial topic in our churches, but the meaning was clear to the Corinthians. Paul stated, “I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all” (v.18, NKJV). Paul was using the word “tongues” for “languages”. As a Jewish scholar, he had learned many languages. On the day of Pentecost, the disciples spoke in various languages. The word tongues and languages are used interchangeably in Acts 2:4, 6, 8. Paul was not against praying in languages or tongues, He was for praying with the mind and the spirit to avoid confusion. So, should we be, seeking in everything we say and pray to edify the body of Christ.
