Paul, a recipient of hospitality, knew first-hand the importance of its demonstration in the lives of believers. Our first reading provides instructions for adding widows to the church’s support list. The widows had to be over 60 years, have a godly character, and be given to hospitality. The widows had to consistently practice hospitality in order to receive hospitality. Our second reading describes the character of the church overseer. He, too, had to have a godly character and practice hospitality to be qualified for the position. We overlook this important function, but God takes it seriously. Regardless of our status or aspirations, God wants us to practice hospitality.
