—1 Samuel 21:1-6
by: Katie Brown.
David was hungry and tired from a hard journey. He had fled for his life from King Saul and then lied to Ahimelech the priest out of desperation and fear. He asked for food, but the only bread in the temple was holy, consecrated bread, which could only be eaten by priests and only in that holy place. Ahimelech bent the rules a bit by saying if David’s men were clean, they could have it. In spite of David’s deception and Ahimelech’s cheating, Jesus later commended Ahimelech for showing mercy and compassion on the hurting, which was more important than the laws. We are blessed by God’s sacrifice to be partakers in His presence.
