—Psalm 83:1-12, 18
by: Angie Osborn.
It is easy to read this psalm and think, “Now that is a prayer I can get behind. Smite my enemies, God!” How are we to understand the sentiment of this song to the Lord? Was the psalmist being as petty and vindictive as we often are when people do not treat us the way we think we deserve to be treated? Keep in mind that the psalmist wrote on behalf of the whole nation here—God’s chosen people and treasured possession. Most importantly, look to the end of the psalm for his motivation—that God would be lifted up (v.18). Next time you are tempted to pray this way, make sure to check to see if your motivations are right.
