—Genesis 17:1-8

The world’s version of covenants often involve negotiation, haggling, and compromise and frequently leave one or both parties discontent with the end result. Both parties also are responsible for upholding their end of the covenant. In some societies, breaking of a formal covenant requires the death of the one who broke it. None of this was true of God’s covenant. God designed, offered, and fulfilled His covenant. He knew that Abraham and his descendants would not be able to walk blameless before Him as the covenant required, so He made provision for the fulfillment of both sides of the covenant.
