The word “abide” appears 10 times in this passage and it literally means to stay or remain stable or fixed in a state. The Miriam dictionary defines it: “to bear patiently; to endure without yielding; to withstand, to wait for, to continue in a place; to accept without objection.” We can see how all of these meanings apply as a branch of the vine. Why do we need to abide in Jesus? So that He can abide in us, for without Him we cannot bear fruit. Look at all the other blessings when we abide in Him: His love, His joy, His friendship, His life.
