Jesus' response has caused much speculation (v. 40). Some believe it is an indirect reference to Habakkuk 2:11 (referring to the destruction of Babylon). If true, Jesus probably was telling them that a failure to declare him Messiah would cause nature to do it instead. There could be no stopping this message. Others argue that Jesus was using hyperbole to tell the Pharisees that they were asking for the impossible. Whatever the case, the religious leaders would stop at nothing to silence the message of Jesus' reign. Today we have similar forces in operation. How will we respond when we are told to be quiet?
