—Mark 14:17-25
by: Andrew J. Camenga.
For the disciples, I imagine that the world seemed to be spinning out of control. Jesus had been pushing to get to Jerusalem on time, all the while letting them know that this would be his last trip. As the disciples listened, it could have easily felt like Jesus was driving a stake through their hearts with a sledgehammer of words-pronouncements of finality. The disciples were hearing Jesus say, "Good-bye."
Yet his message was not one of conquered hope. It was, instead, a message of delayed promise. Death would swallow Jesus, and Jesus would, one day, drink of the fruit of the vine again. Far from hopeless finality, the broken body and poured blood provided a conclusive start to a new and living way.
