Jesus said that if we wish to be first, to be a leader, we must first become a servant of all. Servanthood is difficult. A servant must sacrifice his or her own desires, perceived rights, time, and, in most cases, monetary gain in order to minister. Not only that, but to be a servant of all means that we must make these sacrifices even for those who do not appreciate it, do not deserve it, and even in some cases do not ask for it. Furthermore, we must do so willingly, cheerfully, joyfully, and faithfully; that is the difference between “serving” and “being a servant.”
