—Psalm 51:10-17
by: Jerry Johnson.
David had to be as depressed as a man could ever be in the aftermath of his great sin. He was a king who had become a liar, adulterer, and murderer in short order. Nathan the prophet told him, "You are the man." His child would die; his household was destined for chaos. About the only thing left was his life.
In the midst of this despair, David exhibited a true heart of repentance. Psalm 51 does indeed provide a call for God's mercy, a relenting of his wrath. We see a glimpse of the cleansing David wants to receive-a clean heart, a steadfast and willing spirit, joy and gladness. When I sin, whether it is great or small, I can obtain both forgiveness and refreshing.
