—Zechariah 9:9-12
by: Jerry Johnson.
Jerusalem had good cause to rejoice when Jesus came into the city on a donkey. He was representing peace, justice, salvation, and humility-attributes of a servant-king. Jesus was to bring true restoration and deliverance. This is the reason we see both Matthew and John refer to this passage with the Messiah in view. This prophesy contained a message of immediate comfort to those who were suffering while exiled in Babylon. The ravages of war would be stopped; prisoners would be set free; they would again have hope. God had a covenant with his people, established by blood. Today we have greater hope because Jesus' blood has provided us with eternal peace and hope.
