—Isaiah 40:1-11
by: Gabrielle Watt.
The beginning of Isaiah 40 is certainly a shift in tone from the previous chapters of Isaiah’s prophecy. God knew that His people had the tendency to lose sight of who He was. He provided them with the comfort and encouragement they needed to endure so they would have the strength to see God’s promises fulfilled. In verse 3, we see the phrase, “a voice of one calling: ‘In the wilderness’” (NIV), which John the Baptist referenced in John 1. What is the connection between God’s comfort in Isaiah and John the Baptist’s ministry in John?
