The vow of a Nazarite was serious. A person who made the vow had to live in a very specific way throughout the time of their vow. The purpose of the vow, however, was not to follow the rules or ritual, but to set the person apart and bring them closer to God. When we choose to fast, give up something for lent, or make some form of spiritual sacrifice, the purpose is to bring us closer to God. We must keep our guard up against pride and meaningless ritual and use it as a time to truly seek communion with our Lord and understanding of what He wants to reveal.
