—Leviticus 19:30-37
by: Jasmine Lynch.
In Leviticus 19, God instructed Israel in how to remain holy as they built loving communities in their new land. They were to be careful not to adopt the sinful practices of the Canaanites. But they were also to treat foreigners with compassion, remembering that they too had once been “aliens” in the land of Egypt. Many countries today are struggling with immigration and refugee problems. We can take a lesson from God’s instructions to Israel here. Many of us (or our ancestors) were also transplanted from other countries. We should imagine what it is like to be a stranger in a strange land and “love him as you love yourself” out of love and respect for “the Lord your God” (v.34).
