What then shall we say was gained by Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh? For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God. For what does the Scripture say? “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness.” Now to the one who works, his wages are not counted as a gift but as his due.

When most of us do something good or worthy of praise, we do our best to let people know how great we are for doing it. We can easily post it online and get hundreds of likes or even a “Way to Go!” in the comment section. Abraham may not have had social media, but he could have easily boasted about the great works he had done and how obedient he had been to God. However, that is not what Abraham did. Instead, he did what he was commanded to do because he loved God and trusted in God’s promise. Therefore, Abraham was credited with righteousness. Think about that the next time you are ready to boast on social media.
