Have you ever worked for someone who professed love for you as long as you were advancing his/her cause, but turned against you when others recognized your part in the achievement? This is what happened to Saul and David’s relationship. “David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him” (v.14, NKJV). Saul behaved foolishly because the Lord had departed from him (v.12). Saul made it appear as thought he was promoting David, but in reality, he was plotting David’s downfall. Saul “made him his captain over a thousand“ (v.13, KJV) and gave David his daughter as his wife, while expecting the Philistines to take him out.
